Use in traditions

In the deserts of northern Mexico candelilleros boil the stems with sulphuric acid to remove the wax, heavy manual work that has been a source of income since the early 20th century. The wax is used in lip balm, chewing gum and as a polish, and is a plant-based substitute for beeswax.
