Clary sage

Salvia sclarea

The essential oil is used in relaxing baths and massages. A small study pointed to a relaxing effect when inhaled; the evidence is limited.

Safety notes

Traditional use is no proof of effectiveness; if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, taking medication or have a medical condition, consult a doctor or pharmacist.

Preparation

External: essential oil in skin-softening milk bath.

Use in traditions

In German the plant is called Muskatellersalbei because it was used to give Rhine wine a muscatel flavour. The mucilage of soaked seeds was put in the eyes to remove dirt, which explains the English name clary ('clear eye'). Today the oil is used mainly in perfume.
