A quark compress, Quarkwickel in German, is a well-known household remedy for a sore throat. According to the German pharmacists' site aponet.de, a cold quark compress can help with an acute, inflamed throat; quark is said to have a cooling and decongesting effect. For phlegm and difficulty swallowing, a compress with quark at body temperature is used.
Ingredients
- 150–250 g cold low-fat quark
- A thin cotton tea towel
- A second dry cloth or scarf
Step by step
- Spread the quark about 1 cm thick in the middle of the tea towel.
- Fold the sides over so the quark does not touch the skin directly.
- Lay the compress around your neck, smooth and not too tight, and wrap the dry cloth around it.
- Remove the compress when it gets warm or after about 20 minutes.
Tips
- For the warm version, let the quark come to room temperature first and then warm it briefly in a bain-marie to body temperature.
