Té de manzanilla

Chamomile tea, in Mexico the first household remedy for an upset stomach.

Traditional use

Time
10 minutes
Makes
1 cup
Chamomile

According to the Atlas of Traditional Mexican Medicine of UNAM, manzanilla is used in Mexico above all for stomach complaints: to ‘settle the stomach’, for cramps, indigestion and empacho, the folk name for an overfull, blocked stomach. It is used most often for stomach ache, from the Pacific coast to Veracruz.

Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp dried chamomile flowers (or a fresh sprig)
  • 250 ml water
  • Optional: a little sugar or honey

Step by step

  1. Bring the water to the boil and take it off the heat.
  2. Add the chamomile, cover and steep for 5 minutes.
  3. Strain and drink warm, in small sips.

Tips

  • In Mexico chamomile is sold at the market in fresh bunches; a chamomile tea bag is fine too.
